Surgeons of Service In The News!

Our Latest coverage in the Inside the Gates Magazine! This press releases outlines the upcoming Shoes of Service Fun Run and 5K on Lake Oconee Academy’s campus on April 8, 2017, spearheaded by Lake Oconee Academy sophomore Anna Harris.

This year the College Board and WE.org designed a new pilot program called AP with WE Service to help students learn to apply classroom learning to real-world situations. In this program, students are encouraged to plan at least one local and one global action to improve their community and the world. Students who complete the program earn a service recognition on their transcript. The WE Learning Framework gives students the foundation to explore issues like hunger, poverty, and lack of education.

Lake Oconee Academy has two AP classes participating in the WE Service program this year. AP Human Geography and AP Spanish Language and Culture have partnered with Surgeons of Service and their program, Shoes of Service. This program is geared toward collecting new and gently used shoes for those in need in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic as well as the tri-county area of Greene, Putnam and Morgan county. As Anna’s WE Service project, she organized a 5K and Fun Run that will become an annual event to fundraise for the Shoes of Service Program with the goal to help provide funds for the expensive shipping containers and transportation costs to Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic.
